Creating a Safe Space

Creating a safe environment for teenagers is about more than just a comfortable space; it is, first and foremost, about the opportunity to be heard. In a world where young voices are often overshadowed by adult concerns, having a dedicated platform for expression is transformative. Today, we are sharing the story of one of our GirlShine course participants, who spoke about her journey through the program, her key insights, and the profound changes she experienced.

On Motivation and First Steps

The young woman joined the project intentionally after seeing an announcement on the center’s Telegram channel and receiving an invitation from a specialist. Having had previous experience with similar activities, she approached the course with a clear request for personal growth. She wasn’t looking for a “fix,” but rather for a community where she could refine her existing strengths.

“I didn’t have any difficulties or problems. I walked in here with confidence,” she recalls.

On Format and Atmosphere

The GirlShine program is built on interaction: through discussions, drawing, and practical exercises, girls learn to analyze life situations. This interactive approach moves away from traditional “lectures,” allowing participants to lead the conversation. For our protagonist, the most valuable format was working in pairs—it was this method that helped her bond with the group and break down social barriers.

“It was very fun and cool; during the practical tasks, I was able to get to know the girls better and learn something new about them. That’s when I felt at ease; I was comfortable. I realized: I am where I ought to be.

The Power of Vulnerability and Connection

A significant part of the journey was the realization that she wasn’t alone in her thoughts. As the sessions progressed, the atmosphere of trust grew, allowing the girls to share personal stories without fear of judgment. This collective vulnerability created a unique bond that turned a group of strangers into a supportive sisterhood. For many, this was the first time they felt their emotions were truly validated by their peers.

On Key Topics: Boundaries and Needs

Among the many topics covered in the course, the participant highlighted the work on personal boundaries. In her opinion, this is the fundamental basis that every child and adult needs for a safe life.

“The topic of personal boundaries touched everyone in one way or another. Many didn’t know what to do with them or how to properly stand up for them. I believe this should be taught everywhere—in kindergartens, schools, and universities—to prevent many troubles.”

A new and unexpected discovery was the session on wants and needs: “I had never heard of such a topic before, but it was just as interesting as the previous ones. It helped me distinguish between what I think I should want and what I actually need for my well-being.”

Long-term Impact and Resilience

Beyond the immediate sessions, the program aims to equip girls with a “psychological toolkit” for the future. By learning to identify red flags in relationships and practicing assertive communication, participants build a shield of resilience that stays with them long after the course ends. It’s about planting seeds of self-assurance that will continue to grow as they navigate adulthood.

Results and Future Plans

Upon completing the course, the participant noted not only new knowledge but also internal resilience. She considers the main outcome to be the ability to support not only herself but also those around her.

“I learned a lot of new things and became wiser. Now I can tell others what I’ve learned and offer advice. Personally, I haven’t changed much, but I’ve become more confident. I plan to use the knowledge I’ve gained to help loved ones or friends get through tough times and strengthen our bond.”

Today, she is focused on active development—both moral and physical. We support her in her desire to work on herself and are delighted that GirlShine has become a reliable foundation for her future.
